The Start of Yamaha® Powersports

Yamaha first started in 1887. The company was founded by Torakusu Yamaha in Japan. The original mission was to manufacture musical instruments, such as pianos and organs. The company logo is a circle of three interlocked tuning forks (which are tools used to tune musical instruments).

The post-War years saw many Japanese companies looking to diversify their product line. The goal was to help make up for lost time due to the war as well as to repurpose war-time manufacturing machines. The company president decided to focus on producing small engines, specifically for motorcycles.

In 1955, the Yamaha Motor Company was created from the larger corporation. The business saw great success with its two-stroke engine motorcycles. In 1968, the company released their four-stroke engines, which also saw great success.
