What Makes It a PWC?

Let's begin by outlining what, exactly, a PWC is. PWC were invented in the 1960s by Norwegian-American motorcyclist Clayton Jacobson III, who had suffered a motorcycle collision and wondered if he could make a marine vehicle that gave him the same thrills with less risk. So he developed some PWC prototypes that were steered with handlebars like a motorcycle and used jet-propulsion to push the craft forward. Sea-Doo even produced an early model, but the designs needed some time to improve.

Thus, the real PWC boom happened during the 1980s, with several manufacturers building their own versions. Most PWC have seating for one to three passengers, along with some storage space and a swim platform. There is a kill-switch that connects to the life jacket or wrist of the operator that will shut off the engine if the operator falls off. Many PWC are designed to be ridden while seated, although some extreme sports models can be ridden while standing up.

Shopping Considerations

When you begin the process of searching for a PWC, you'll want to take a few things into consideration. First, build a budget that factors in not only the sticker price of the PWC, but also safety gear, maintenance fees and insurance costs. You'll definitely want to get yourself a life jacket to wear while riding, even if you're an excellent swimmer.

Think, too, about how many people you'd like to take along for the ride so you can get a model that has enough seating and storage space for everyone's gear. If you're a novice, a wide sit-down PWC with a less powerful engine is best for cruising around the lake casually. Expert riders may wish to get a stand-up model with a supercharged engine that can achieve much higher speeds.

You'll also want to think about additional features you may want, like modular seating, Bluetooth capabilities and waterproof charging bays.
