The Pontoons
Pontoon boats get their name from the large, hollow structures at the bottom of the craft which are called pontoons. These pontoons are the main reason why pontoon boats are so stable. While most pontoon boats have only two pontoons, there are also models with three (which are called tritoons). The pontoons themselves vary in size, though a diameter of between 23 and 25 inches is considered standard.

Different models of pontoon boats will have different features. For instance, if you do a lot of fishing, look for a pontoon that has a livewell and rod holders, as well as slip-resistant flooring. If watersports are more your thing, you’ll want a pontoon with a powerful engine and enough storage space to stow your gear. You want your pontoon to have enough space for everyone you are taking out on the water. At the same time, larger boats tend to cost more. Decide how many people you want to bring early on and use that to determine how large of a boat you should buy.
The Ideal Horsepower
When it comes to engine power, pontoon boats can range from 40 HP all the way to more than 300 HP. If you only plan to cruise around the lake, a less powerful engine should be fine. However, if you plan to do some watersports, you’ll need something a bit beefier.
