ATV Gear

ATV Gear Article from Sky Powersports Lakeland

It takes guts to sit astride a four-wheeler and plunge into the forest, across the dunes or through the prairie, but powersports enthusiasts love nothing better than the breathtaking excitement incited by a bumpy, fast ride on an ATV. Riding without any protective gear or safety equipment is a fool’s errand, though, so it’s important to secure the success of your ride by preparing yourself accordingly. Sky Powersports Lakeland is your central Florida ATV dealership, so we’ve provided this list of ATV gear you should have to make your quad ride as safe and comfortable as possible.

Winch

A winch will come in handy at some point in your ATV riding career, whether you’re looking to drag a tree out of your path or pull a friend’s quad out of the swamp. Make sure that the winch you choose is matched to the amount of power and pull your ATV can offer so you don’t unnecessarily drain the battery while trying to pull too much weight. Winch ropes come in wire or synthetic, and you can choose between these based on your ATV’s strength and the style of winch you obtain.

Protective Attire

Every ATV rider should invest in a good DOT-rated helmet with a high crash test rating to protect you from severe head trauma in the event of an impact. Your options are to either wear a motorcycle helmet, which will provide a full-face shield that protects your eyes from flying debris, or to invest in a motocross helmet and a pair of goggles that will serve the same purpose. The rest of your clothing should consist of gloves, ankle boots, long sleeves and long pants. Not only will these items protect you from debris on the trail, they’ll keep your skin shielded from the sun, reducing the need for sunscreen.

LED Lights

Bright LED lights are customizable and allow you to add both flair and increased visibility to your ATV, making dusk and dawn rides much more practical and safe, along with rides through dark forests where visibility may be limited. LED lights are affordable, easy to install and you can choose how strong or bright you want them so that they’re compatible with your ATV’s battery.

GPS

A GPS could save you time and trouble by helping you to figure out your path when you’re off-roading. These devices are compact and relatively affordable, so stowing one in your storage compartment with some extra batteries is not a bad idea, just in case you do get turned around. You could even plot your way around obstacles or figure out how long a given path will take you to ride, if you so desired.

Cargo Box

Your ATV usually doesn’t offer much in the way of storage capacity, but you can always add some aftermarket storage to mount to your cargo rack that lets you stash your gear and essentials. This is a great idea for carrying things like a first-aid kit, signal flares, rain gear and your ATV repair kit, plus snacks and water to keep you happy on the road.

Camera

A small digital video camera can help you share your adventures with friends and family at home who might be less intrepid than you are. There are a variety of styles that are rugged enough to withstand the rigors of an off-roading ride. Cameras are available over a wide range of price points, so you’re sure to find one that will fit your budget. You could get a helmet-mounted style for a first-person viewpoint, or mount one to the front of your four wheeler to offer a more immersive experience.
